Sentiment That Dies Hard

Dear Mr Gopal:
Another ironic and sad fact which you might not be aware of is- Bangladesh as an independent country started its journey as a secular and democratic state. Secularism was one of the four pillars country's constitution was based on. But following Sheikh Mujib's assasination in '75, securalism was replaced by general Zia and instead "Bislillah....Rahim" was added to the constitution, which was later followed by declaration of Islam as a state religion  by general Ershad in 80s.

so u think we r critical of hindu fanatics but sparing or afraid of speaking against islamist thugs?? wish u had a chance to read the list of hate mails that i've reeceived so far from muslim fanatics after i wrote my article "my experience w/ islam." even as a liberal and humanist forum, mukto-mona.com is often accused of being "pro-india" and "pro-hindu;" although we treat this as a compliement that fanatics on both sides dislike us. besides, we luv the prefixes "pro" and "anti" but a little different way. we luv to think we r pro-humanity but anti-bigots/fanatics

ur comment abt mehul kamdar's so called silence on ban of "satanic verses" by muslim mullahs simply proves u r really ignorant and jump in to conclusion abt people w/o any evidence. check out mukto-mona forum's following statement condemning mullah gangs' screaming/threats upon salman rushdie's receving knighthood title. fyi, mehul kamdar is the co-author of this statement since he serves as a co-moderator (voluntary basis) of mukto-mona.

kindly do some home work be4 issuing a presumptious  comment about someone next time.

thx.

p.s. wrt my opinion abt govt funding to religious institutes, i said it following ur first comment on this thread since it made sense to me but it's only now that u've noticed it...hence ..i said don't make a snap judgement abt people.

mehul:
well said except for i only wish those clown were created w/ a little more grey matter than what they possess now to realize the hidden meaning of ur humour [after all, brain transfer is yet to be successful thru' surgery]. :-)

btw, did u notice some strange similarities b/w muslim fanatics and their counter parts of hindu origin? whenever unmasked, both muslim/hindu thugs resort to name callings,  sensation of nationalism (as clown groups r doing here) and preserving their religions . guess how happy samuel johnson would have been to see accuracy of his words thru' the monkey dance of these clown groups! oh..yea, have u also noticed how these morons have reminded us of a few hindu-haters muslims' using of fake hindu names (these blockheads tend to think that'll add credibility to whatever crap they wish to say)....no doubt, fanatics of various religions r more similar to each other than they r different.

for now, i'd luv to see them stay w/ us...........yes, at times we do need entertainment and clown groups here seem to have a natutal talent to give us the fun we need so much :-)))

munir.akram needs to extend his horizon a little bit. bigotry has many facets. killers of socrates, bruno, for instance,  were not muslims yet they were no less bigots than today's islamist jihadis. and bigotry not necessarily is limited to just religious extremism. hitler's ultra nationalim, dictatorship in the name of communism etc r examples of non religious bigotry.

it's only naive a mind who thinks someone has freed himself'herself from bigotry just 'coz s/he has abandoned islam. i don't care if u r a muslim/x-tian/hindu/jew.... or an athiest. what matters to me is how u view ur place in the world and relation w/ the mankind.

u have made some good points. government must monitor the donors and funding sources of all religious esp. islamic institutes- be it in india, pakistan, bangladesh or any other country. it's already established that not taking strong action against jingoistic ideal preachers like jihadis for the fear of losing muslim votes or having branded "anti-muslim" in many cases has only promoted the growth of jihadism.

subject:  a response to "not-smart"  [earlier subject line mistakenly read "not-typical". sorry for the confusion]

while i've full sympathy for u as a survivor of islamic violence, i find some of your views  dangereously skewed. i understand not every one is nelson mandela who could turn hatred arising out of personal suffering into a rational and benevolent outlook.

1. you, for example said, <<<I am offended that a hindu is joining hands with a muslim to write about the Lal Masjid incident which is just a farce.>>>

- this shows u have yet to get over w/ the parochial way of identifying people solely on the basis of their religious identity---a trend so prevailing in the religion which you claim to have abandoned some 15 yrs ago!

 2. the two writers of this article are non-religious themselves and don't give it a damn to religions they were bon into. so was it fair to identify them as "a muslim and a hindu" w/o knowing respective backgrounds. at least u could do a google search, or is it ur temptation for self-publicity as a "rebellion" has overtaken ur sense of reason and critical analysis?

3. u said: <<<<Therefore the mukto-mona blog itself is a slap in the face of hindus by a hindu telling us that we do not deserve to be respected.>>>>

--what do u know abt mukto-mona? did u visit and read mukto-mona.com and its members' write-ups? do u know most of its core members were once muslims but now feel proud to identify themselves simply as humanist/freethinker?

true that once i was a muslim and now just a humanist; but does it ,however, mean i'd criticize or curse all muslims like a bigot? i've not abandoned islam w/ the hope of losing my sense of reason; it's other way around. dogma, doctrine, discrimination---whether within or outside islam -- i'd raise my voice against it. appeasement & intellectual honesty don't go together, my dear.

4. <<<Believe me, and I have seen how dishonest they are, no one should ever trust a muslim in this world.>>>

-so u think what u've seen applies to every single muslim in the world? what abt indian politician late abul kalam azad of congress, or humayun kabir, poet mirza galib, or today's asma jahangir, pervez hoodbhoy of pakistan, or  ? unlike u & me, they didn't abandon islam yet i don't see any example that they were liers or violent people.

5. <<< Any hindu who calls himself/herself a friend of a muslim is in my opinion, violating his religion and motherland just like the muslims and are therefore not hindu anymore.>>>>

-have u inherited this tendency of issuing a fatwa like decree from ur former religion islam?

6. <<<The truth is the truth and nothing can change it and muslims have to be punished.>>>>

-what's the "truth"? ur abandoning islam and now becoming an objective and rational being or  the mullahs luring muslim youths in the name of jihad and heaven in the afterlife?

regards,
jahed ahmed

<<<<As pointed out by mukto-mona, "belief ...is harmless and in many cases,  vital for survival." ..if by this he means that in Islamic societies, EVERYONE MUST be conforming and Muslims, then he's got it right.  Here everyone MUST be Muslims and no one can leave the Muslim faith freely.>>>>

To roop_910:  when it comes to Islam, belief is no more personal; it's strictly authoritarian which makes many muslims proudly say "unlike other religions, Islam is a complete code of life." Nothing could be more detrimental than the thought - a religion could be a "complete code of life". Where is the room for science and reason?  The very meaning of the word Islam means submission to almight Allah and His heavenly kingdom where martyrdom is also a component.

Thanks to all those who've read and made comments abt our article so far. We always appreciate feedbacks from learned readers even if it's a curse.

To roop_910:

good question! in my opinion, belief as such is harmless and in many cases, vital for survival. problem, however, starts when a particular belief system takes the form of chauvinism i.e. tendency to think- my own belief system is the most superior of all. for the very same reason, hitler's theory of germans being "the most superior race on earth" caused such a heavoc although it was not a religious theory. muslims in general are not used to accepting the truth-- their religion is just one of the thousands possible ways of life style. there's nothing called "heavenly" in it or for that matter, in other religions.

To insolent:
you're wrong in your assumption that we don't intend to call spade a spade. that also proves you're not familiar w/ my personal philosophy and writings. pls check out my article "my experience with islam." but in case ur expectation was to see us critical of islamic fanaticism and fundamentalism only in a slective manner, we're not sorry to disappoint you, even if that proves us "gut"less.
